Baby proofing: how hard can it be?

Most of the directions on the packages for the door jams, cupboard locks, outlet covers, etc make it sounds so easy - even a monkey could do it.

What about a paci-lovin' baby? :)

Thanks to our best mommy counselor ever, Karen, we have a house full of her leftover safety items ready to be installed. And from the photos here - you can see that it's way over due.

Friends of ours had a baby-proofing consultant come in for an estimate (yes, they have these - who knew?). The total cost to baby proof their home: $1700!!! What?!?! I think I'm in the wrong business!!

How long have other parents waited to baby proof? Any tips or hints on what you did?

$1700?????? Did they live on the top of a mountain or something? Sheesh.

Some things are no-brainers: the outlet covers, etc. A lot of it depends on the nature of your baby though. E.g., we didn't have to put cabinet locks on our kitchen or bathroom cabinets because Eli just wasn't interested in them. However, we DID have to install hotel chain locks on our doors because he would just walk out of the house! So, I'd just pay attention to Greta once she's up and walking and see what is lured by. Then you can run to the store and get what you need.

$1700 is the pricey DC microcosm we live in (unfortunate).
We are really dreading the cost of pre-schooling but the good flip side is that Arlington public schools rock!!

ok, that's just ridiculous! what is the 1700 for? all you need at greta's age is outlet covers and cabinet locks to keep her out of cleaning stuff. and, like your friend said, it depends on the child. andrew never had any interest in toilets or ovens, but alex certainly does. good luck! =)
